Ice
sculptures fill downtown Gallery Night & Day, now a 17-year-old event, has become a true “happening” in Milwaukee. While known as a great opportunity to view works by established and up-and-coming artists, Gallery Night also has established a reputation as a not-to-be-missed social event. The event is held quarterly throughout the year. Expanded last year to include daytime on a Saturday, Gallery Night & Day features 47 venues throughout downtown and neighboring areas. Adding to the fun of the 2005 winter event is Milwaukee’s 2nd Annual Ice Sculpting Competition. Local artists and sculptors will be competing for cash and prizes in designing their icy impressions of the theme “It’s All Downtown.” Twenty blocks of ice placed in front of participating museums, galleries and businesses will be transformed from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21. Sculptures will be judged on adherence to theme, creativity, intricacy and detail. Gallery Night & Day again features free parking in the Historic Third Ward parking structures, and free rides on the Friday Gallery Night Xpress. The Xpress, a 20-passenger bus, makes thre stops – Historic Third Ward, East Town and the Milwaukee Art Museum. The bus makes a continuous loop from 5-9 p.m. with stops every 15 minutes. For more information, contact the Historic Third Ward Association at 414-273-1173 or visit www.historicthirdward.org. |
