First Gallery Night & Day of year Jan. 19-20
GALLERY NIGHT & DAY, now a 19-year-old event, has become a true "happening" in Milwaukee. While known as a great opportunity to view works by established and up-and-coming artists, Gallery Night also has established a reputation as a not-to-be-missed social event.
The event is held quarterly throughout the year. The Jan. 19-20 Gallery Night & Day features 47 venues throughout downtown and neighboring areas.
Spanning Friday evening and Saturday during the day, Gallery Night & Day again features free parking in the Historic Third Ward parking structures. Ride the Friday Gallery Night Xpress for free! The 20-passenger bus makes a continuous loop approximately every 15 minutes from 5-9 p.m. and offers a stop in the Historic Third Ward, East Town and near the Milwaukee Art Museum.
FIVE OF THE 12 artists and sculptors participating in the 4th Annual Ice Sculpting Competition will be creating their works in the Historic Third Ward from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Jan. 19. The theme of the annual competition this year is "The Sounds of Music." Sculptures will be judged on adherence to the theme, creativity, intricacy and detail. Winners will be announced at 9 p.m. Jan. 19 on the upper level of the Milwaukee Public Market.
Milwaukee’s Riverwalk, which runs from the Historic Third Ward north to past the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, is a great place to stroll, even during colder months. The Riverwalk was honored with awards in 2006, including the Special Achievement for a Public Space recognition from the International Downtown Association (IDA).
The Riverwalk also won the 2006 Sustainability and Energy Efficiency (SE2) Award of Excellence. SE2 recognizes leadership in energy efficient and sustainable design, construction and operation. Specifically, SE2 honored the “moonlighting” system used to light the Riverwalk at night. The Riverwalk also won awards in 2006 from Wisconsin Builder Magazine and the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
