feature article - january 2008 Gallery Night & Day expands ice sculpting competition GALLERY NIGHT & DAY, now in its 20th year, is a true "happening" in Milwaukee and the first of the popular quarterly events is set for Jan. 18 & 19. While known as a great opportunity to view works by established and up-and-coming artists, Gallery Night also has established a reputation as a not-to-be-missed social event. This year’s Jan. 18-19 Gallery Night & Day features 57 venues throughout downtown and neighboring areas. Spanning Friday evening and Saturday during the day, Gallery Night & Day again features free parking in the Historic Third Ward parking structures at 212 N. Milwaukee & 225 E. Chicago. Gallery-goers also can ride the Friday Gallery Night Xpress at no charge. The 20-passenger bus makes a continuous loop approximately every 15 minutes from 5-9 p.m. and offers five stops in between the Third Ward and East Town. Again part of the January event is the Fifth Annual Ice Sculpting competition. Plans for 2008 promise a competition that is truly “bigger and better.” Participating artists and sculptors will have the option of carving creations from as many as six ice blocks. Competitors will create their works on Gallery Night and into the following day at two locations - Catalano Square, N. Broadway and E. Menomonee St. in the Third Ward, and Cathedral Square, N. Jefferson St and E. Wells St. in East Town. The two park locations will allow for larger ice sculptures and provide a gathering place for people to view them. Sculptures will be judged on adherence to the theme, creativity, intricacy and detail. Winners will be announced Jan. 19. For more information, visit the Historic Third Ward at www.historicthirdward.org or call the office at 414-273-1173. |
