feature article - march 2007 St. Patrick’s Parade March 10 starts green week THE SHAMROCK CLUB of Wisconsin’s 41st Annual St. Patrick’s Parade steps off from Wisconsin Avenue at Old World 3rd St. at noon on Saturday, March 10. While this is the club’s 41st anniversary of producing the parade, the event actually dates back to 1843. Milwaukee’s parade is the sixth oldest in the nation, predating the incorporation of the city. The parade features more than 120 units including Irish dance groups, pipe and drum corps, and 90 honored guests from the New York Police Department. The route travels from Wisconsin Ave. at Old World 3rd St. east to Plankinton Ave., north on Plankinton to Wells St., west on Wells to Old World 3rd St., north on Old World 3rd St. to Juneau Ave., east on Juneau to Water St., south on Water to Highland Blvd., ending at Edison. Parking is available at The Shops of Grand Avenue for only $1 during the parade. Other St. Patrick’s events that weekend include the ShamROCK St. Patrick’s Kick-Off party on Friday, March 9, 5:30-11 p.m. at the Miller Time Pub, 509 W. Wisconsin Ave., Hilton Milwaukee City Center. The party will feature traditional Irish food, green beer, exciting giveaways and Irish music performed by Frogwater and Reilly. On Saturday, March 10, a Mass honoring Saint Patrick, will be held at 8:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Congregation, 1105 S. 7th St. on Milwaukee’s south side, followed by a pancake breakfast fundraiser for the church. The Shamrock Club holds its Post Parade Party on Saturday from 1– 7 p.m. This family-friendly event at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, 2133 W. Wisconsin Ave., includes four stages of continuous entertainment. Dozens of parties complete with Irish entertainment and green beer will take place during and after the parade at the bars and restaurants along the parade route, such as Fitzgibbons Pub at 1127 N. Water St., Water Street Brewery, 1101 N. Water St., and Brew City, 125 E. Juneau.
