Cozy restaurant and bakery in Historic Third Ward

Broadway Bistro’s menu a hit from morning ‘til night

Broadway Bistro is located appropriately at the corner of Broadway and Buffalo St. in the heart of the Historic Third Ward. The picturesque brick building at 241 N. Broadway also houses a group of upscale retailers – 3rd Ward Jewelry, Katie Gingrass Gallery, CabinetWerks Design Studio, and shoo (shoes and accessories).

For years, the spot now occupied by Broadway Bistro has been a favorite for a quick cup of coffee or lunch break. When Tesa Santoro-Schulte and husband Joseph Schulte stepped in as owners two years ago, both the menu and décor acquired a new sophistication.

With its lower level location, Broadway Bistro reminds us of great restaurants we’ve visited in New York and Paris. The coziness of this “downstairs” setting combines with a sleek interior to beckon guests inside.

The real standout here, however, is the menu. Chef and partner Steven Holz has created a menu that capitalizes on the best fresh ingredients available.

At lunch from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday there are appetizers, sandwiches, salads and homemade soups to choose from. Broadway Bistro’s creativity is revealed with the side choices – in addition to French fries, there are lemon feta pasta salad or Asian coleslaw.

Enjoy dinner 5-9 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday and 5-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Broadway Bistro has a comfortable bar area where you can savor a cocktail, wine or beer. (And keep posted on March Madness with the flat panel TV!) Dinner entrees include Tuscan-style ribs with saffron balsamic raspberry glaze and leek-wrapped Atlantic salmon. Desserts are sublime! Choices include an array of gelato flavors. Coffee is provided local roaster Stone Creek Coffee, and you can linger over an espresso drink after a great meal.

In March, the Bistro launches a Friday fish fry with the traditional battered and baked fish, as well as twists such as a potato- and herb-encrusted cod. On “Seafood Saturday Nights,” savor half-price bottles of wine and creations by Chef Holz, featuring fresh fish from the St. Paul Fish Market located in the nearby Milwaukee Public Market .

Travelers often find themselves looking for a restaurant that offers breakfast. Broadway Bakery, also in the lower level, serves up breakfast for dine-in or take-out from 7-11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Throughout the day, those on the go can grab a quick coffee or espresso drink, pastry, Panini or deli sandwich, fresh salads, homemade soups and more. Lunch delivery also is available.

An all-day brunch is served from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Here, the morning meal is anything but boring! In addition to traditional items, there are many versions of the omelet and crepe options like Harvest Squash Chutney Crepes. Novel egg dishes include Blackstone poached eggs (served with tomato Puttanesca). Crème Brulee Oatmeal and Morning Bun French Toast both put delicious twists on old favorites.

Broadway Bistro also has become one of Milwaukee’s premier caterers. With experience with groups from 12 to 1,200, the staff can help plan creative options for office functions, parties, business meetings, cocktail parties, pharmaceutical representative luncheons and more.

Phone Broadway Bistro at 226-1986 or the Broadway Bakery at 431-2880.
