Saz's State House celebrates 30 years!

NESTLED in the Miller Valley, just west of the brewery and north of the stadium that carry the same name, is a restaurant that is almost as familiar to Milwaukeeans as beer and baseball.

Now celebrating its 30th year, Saz’s State House continues to thrive at 5539 W. State St., but it’s a much larger operation than it was when owner Steve Sazama first opened the door in 1976.

Today, when you step inside the historic building Sazama chose for his restaurant and sports bar, you will find a Cheers-like circular bar where everyone quickly becomes your friend. Open the menu, and find not only award-winning barbecued ribs, barbequed pork and barbecued chicken sandwiches, but a number of other enticing choices.

At lunch, sandwiches include creative “takes” on the All-American burger, club sandwiches, wraps and even “the ultimate grilled cheese.” Homemade soups, salads and “light and healthy” selections round out the menu. On Fridays, Saz’s honors Milwaukee’s Fish Fry tradition by offering fish and shrimp versions.

For dinner, Saz’s offers Certified Angus steaks, combinations like steak & shrimp, steak & ribs and chicken & ribs. Chef’s favorites include chicken Parmesan, Cajun chicken, potato-crusted filet of cod and pasta primavera, vegetarian or with chicken. Monthly specials allow even more creativity.

At dinner, guests also can select from Saz’s long list of sandwiches. No matter what their main selection, few can resist the restaurant’s signature appetizers––ribs (of course), trademark mozzarella marinara, cheese curds and sour cream & chive fries.

Here, friendly and efficient service is as much a tradition as Saz’s Original Barbecue Sauce. Although the restaurant often plays to a capacity crowd, servers always are attentive, adding to the fun of your visit.

Saz’s has been a baseball tailgate specialist from the start, feeding Brewers fans when the team was in the American League and now during battles with National League opponents. Legendary opening day parties, like the one this month, begin at Saz’s and continue at Miller Park. Saz’s also supports Milwaukee’s other professional and collegiate games, proving transportation to and from the action.

Today, Saz’s also is one of the city’s major caterers and a popular stop at Summerfest, State Fair, and other festivals and events. A 2002 expansion means Saz’s can host business meetings and private parties in the State Room.

Saz’s State House is open from 11 a.m.-9:30 pm. Mon.-Thurs., 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday & Sat. On Sunday, brunch is served from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., dinner from 3-9 p.m. Carryout service always is available.
