Mader’s

Updating a century of service

AT A TIME when the most successful restaurants in the Midwest have been in business for only a few decades, Mader’s is now in its second century of service to Milwaukee residents and visitors from throughout the world.

While the Bavarian specialties that have made the restaurant an international destination always are popular, Mader’s today offers lighter selections, which now are available in the historic Mader’s restaurant on Old World 3rd Street and aboard Milwaukee’s Midwest Airlines.

Executive Chef Shawn Monroe introduced a new menu that featured an array of lighter selections as part of the restaurant’s 2002, 100th anniversary celebration. Now, fresh seafood and Wisconsin’s finest steaks compliment Mader’s renowned German favorites.

Creative food presentation, the freshest ingredients, local products and foods not readily available are all hallmarks of Chef Monroe’s kitchen. The restaurant’s excellence was heralded in 2005, when Midwest Airlines chose Mader’s to assist with development and preparation of its Best Care Cuisine.

Midwest Airlines, determined to resist trends in the airline industry, distinguish itself from the competition and please customers, tapped Mader’s to design fresh, contemporary buy-on-board meals.

Mader's began serving many Midwest's flights in May 2005. As of January 2006, Mader's was handling all the food service at Midwest's “Best Care Club” in Milwaukee. Mader's also began serving in-flight meals for the Milwaukee Bucks, Fun-Jet and Altria Corporation's Milwaukee departures.

“Mader's in-flight services have rapidly grown to a multi-million dollar operation in just seven months due to our catering departments outstanding reputation,” says Victor Mader, owner.

Mader is the grandson of German immigrant Charles Mader, and the family has operated the restaurant for over 100 years without interruption. Located in the heart of downtown at 1037 N. Old World 3rd St., Mader’s has survived wars, prohibition and changing American eating habits.

While the seafood, steaks and salads are tempting, few can pass up the chance to sample one of the restaurant’s German favorites. For example, Rhine sauerbraten features marinated beef topped with a sweet and sour sauce, white raisins and toasted almonds. Count Esterhazy Schnitzel (served to President Gerald Ford) is a veal steak crowned with sour cream, mushrooms, peas, carrots and onions.

But whether you choose traditional German or a new innovation, save room for dessert. The dessert tray features tortes, strudels, bread pudding, and more.

Sunday Brunch is served from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and features breakfast items, entrees, soup, pasta, side dishes, seafood, international cheeses, appetizers, and tantalizing pastries and desserts.

The bar offers an extensive wine and beer list, as well as specialty martinis, and is a great place to linger amid Mader’s collection of antiques.

Mader’s is open 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10:30-9 p.m. Sunday. Reservations are recommended. Phone 414-271-3377 or 800-558-7171. Also, visit www.madersrestaurant.com.
