coffeeAlterra baristas second and third in competition

TWO BARISTAS from Milwaukee's Alterra Coffee Roasters finished second and third in the 2008 Great Lakes Regional Barista Competition held in Milwaukee earlier this year.

Justin Teisl and Scott Lucey, who were pictured in KEY Milwaukee's March cover feature on the regional competition, took second and third, respectively. More than 30 baristas from throughout the Midwest took part in the event sponsored by Alterra.

Earlier in 2008, Alterra was named one of the country's "10 Hottest Coffeehouses" in Forbes Traveler magazine. Experts in the specialty coffee industry and connoisseurs nationwide were polled to help compile the list, which included coffeehouses in Seattle, San Francisco, New York and Chicago.

Alterra was cited by the magazine because of its focus on quality and the craft of brewing excellent coffee. Forbes Traveler also touched on the growing trend among specialty coffee roasters to develop direct relationships with farmers from whom they source their beans. Alterra has connected with coffee growers since 1998, when a direct-buying relationship was formed with a cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico.

Alterra operates coffee shops at nine locations in the Milwaukee area, including a widely acclaimed cafe in a historic pumping station on Lincoln Memorial Drive.
