Everyone’s Irish this month,
especially at 43rd annual parade

Spaces & Traces tour explores Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward HISTORIC MILWAUKEE, Inc. holds the 28th Annual Spaces & Traces Tour on Saturday, May 16, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Historic Third Ward. Formerly a warehousing and manufacturing district, the Third Ward has been a hotbed of recent development.

Structures have been rehabilitated into unique condo and commercial spaces. The tour includes talks by local historians on the history of the Third Ward. Also included this year are two architectural firms, Engberg Anderson and HGA. Both have done preservation-related work throughout the Third Ward and adapted historic buildings for their headquarters.

Tickets to lectures are sold the same day of the tour and will be held at the Italian Community Center, 631 E. Chicago St. At 11 a.m., “With Muskrats As Neighbors: A History of the Third Ward,” by John Gurda, Milwaukee-born writer and historian.

At 1 p.m. “From Ashes to Arias” by Frank Alioto, Milwaukee-born Fire Department Captain of Engine Co. 6, author and historian. During the home tours, trained guides will describe the history and architecture of each building. All ticket-holders will receive a souvenir booklet with tour highlights and additional historical background on the Historic Third Ward.

For non-members, advance purchase tickets are $25 and day-of-event tickets are $30. Tickets will be available on May 16 at the Milwaukee Public Market, 400 N. Water St., and the Italian Community Center. Both are located in the Third Ward.
