Best view of city still from deck of IROQUOIS

boatMORE THAN ever before, the best view of Milwaukee is from Lake Michigan. And for over 40 years, visitors have been getting that view from the decks of the IROQUOIS.

Built in 1922 as a Great Lakes cargo vessel, the IROQUOIS this year has a new owner and a new look, in keeping with the new buildings and features that line the Milwaukee River and the city’s spectacular lakefront.

Jake Chianelli acquired the IROQUOIS a year ago and already has added a party yacht called VOYAGEUR to create Milwaukee Boat Line. The IROQUOIS remains the featured tour boat, but Chianelli sees the new charter yacht filling a need for special parties and corporate outings. For food and beverage service, he has teamed with Rip Tide Seafood Bar & Grill in the Historic Third Ward.

Beginning this month, the refurbished IROQUOIS offers 1/1/2-hour tours at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. every day. Tours begin at the IROQUOIS dock on the west bank of the Milwaukee River between Michigan St. and Clybourn Ave. Surface parking is available just west of the dock (enter from Plankinton Ave.) and in the Chase Bank parking structure across the river on Water St.

IROQUOIS tours today offer much more to see than they did during the first four decades of the ship’s service to visitors. The daily cruises follow the Milwaukee River, opening four bridges, and providing good views of the many new condominiums in the Historic Third Ward and Walker’s Point. The ship then passes under the Hoan Bridge and into the harbor where passengers frequently see oceangoing ships before the IROQUOIS turns north to McKinley Marina, home of the Milwaukee Yacht Club.

The IROQUOIS then returns closer to the lakefront to provide passengers with spectacular views of the expanding city skyline, the Calatrava addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin and the sailing vessel Denis Sullivan and the Summerfest grounds.

Chianelli also plans summer “happy hour” cruises for the IROQUOIS at 5:30 p.m. The VOYAGEUR is available for parties, meetings and other special events. Call 414-294-9450 or visit MKEboat.com.
