Four downtown patios you don’t want to miss for food, fun and relaxation
IT’S PATIO time for Milwaukee and Wisconsin restaurants.
Our dining section, starting on page 58 of this issue, designates with a sun icon all the spots where patio seating is available. Many make the most of every chance to provide outside dining, while others have gone to great lengths and expense to build special patios and decks.
This month, KEY Milwaukee features four downtown Milwaukee restaurants, which we feel are true patio gems – unique spaces to enjoy a great lunch or dinner:
Jacques Chaumet of Chez Jacques, 1022 S. 1st St., carefully created his Wine Garden Patio with as much thought as he puts into his French country dishes. A mural on the restaurant’s back wall by local artist Amanda Aquino blends a French country scene with U.S. landmarks, and a large chestnut tree shelters diners. Add a glass of wine and a crepe and take a vacation.
The Milwaukee Ale House’s two-story decks on the Milwaukee River are packed on every sunny day and some that are not so sunny. Located at 233 N. Water St. in the Historic Third Ward, the Ale House is on the south end of the Downtown RiverWalk. It’s easily one of the top riverside locations in this or any other city.
Upstream and a block from the river, Trinity•Three Irish Pubs, 125 E. Juneau Ave., provides an authentic Irish patio experience. The stonework is made in Milwaukee, but is reminiscent of walls throughout the Emerald Isle. We know, we’ve been there.
The Milwaukee Brat House, 1013 N. Old World 3rd St., has tables on the sidewalk and opens its spacious front windows, but the real patio gem is at the rear of the two-year-old pub. Designed to blend the best of the New York City and Milwaukee pub scenes, the Brat House’s patio is tucked between historic brick buildings. It’s an urban retreat in every way.
