Grand Night for Singing starts toes tapping July 10

GET SET FOR a toe-tapping “Grand Night for Singing” beginning July 10 and continuing through Aug. 1 at the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway, as Milwaukee’s Skylight Opera Theatre presents a musical revue of the works of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

“A Grand Night for Singing” opened the 1994 Broadway season, earning two Tony nominations, including Best Musical. With musical arrangements that include the sultry Andrews Sisters-esque “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” a swinging “Honey Bun” and a jazzy “Kansas City,” the review is guaranteed to start toes tapping to familiar melodies that are surprisingly up to date.

Offering a fresh take on Rogers & Hammerstein, the review also features favorites like “Surrey With the Fringe On Top,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” “Maria,” “Shall We Dance?,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” and the revue’s theme, “It’s a Grand Night for Singing.”

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein collaborated for 17 years, beginning in 1943. They produced some of the world’s most beloved musicals including Oklahoma!, South Pacific, The King and I, The Sound of Music and Carousel. The pair earned 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, two Grammys, two Pulitzer Prizes and two Emmys.

Tickets for the revue, which kicks of the Skylight’s 46th season, are available from noon-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the Broadway Theatre Center Box Office in the Historic Third Ward, by phone a 414-291-7800 or online at www.skylightopera.com.
