JULY 2006 U.S. Open winner in field for 39th U.S. Bank Open
It will be the 39th year for Milwaukee’s stop on the PGA Tour. Brown Deer, just north of Good Hope Rd. at Green Bay Rd. in Glendale, continues to be one of the few public courses to host a PGA event. Early entries along with Ogilvy include Carl Pettersson of Sweden, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour; Scott Verplank and Nick O’Hern, members of the last U.S. and International President’s Cup Teams; Joey Sindelar, a seven-time tour winner and Olin Browne, a three-time winner. Also in the running will be Wisconsin native Steve Stricker, who finished in a tie for sixth at the U.S. Open. Activities begin at the U.S. Bank Championship on July 24 with a pro-am tournament and professional practice rounds. The American Family Insurance Youth Clinic, a Charity Shoot Out and Pro practice rounds follow on July 25 with the Aurora Health Care Pro-Am on Wednesday, July 26. The first round of the tournament is set for 7 a.m.-6 p.m. July 27, with championship round on Sunday, July 30, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Ben Crane, the defending champion, is scheduled to defend his title. Crane earned the $684,000 winner’s check by becoming only the second wire-to-wire winner in the history of the event. Formerly known as the Greater Milwaukee Open, the PGA tournament is now sponsored b y U.S. Bank, the nation’s six largest financial holding company with assets of $210 billion. Playing at Miller Park, where the retractable dome ensures all games will be played, the Brewers have 13 games in July, including a series with the Chicago Cubs which is likely to be near capacity, regardless of the teams’ records.
