Bastille Days festival brings Paris to Milwaukee

bastilleDUST OFF your beret!  Downtown Milwaukee’s Cathedral Square Park at Wells and Jefferson Sts. and the surrounding four-block area become a Parisian playground for the 26th annual Bastille Days, a free event held July 12-15.  Festival hours are 11 a.m.-midnight, Thursday through Saturday, and 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday.

Bastille Days, among the nation’s largest French-themed festivals, features the French language, live music, daily chef and wine demonstrations, marketplace and the ambiance of 43-foot Eiffel Tower replica.

This four-day event kicks off on July 12 with the M&I Bank Storm the Bastille Run/Walk. This 5K-run/2-mile walk begins at 9 p.m.

Throughout the event, an eclectic blend of music fills four stages with jazz, folk, world, Cajun, zydeco, and rock. Also entertaining the crowd are escape artists, puppets, mimes, posers, tango and belly dancers, and performers.

More than 90 merchant booths add to the fun.  Food and beverage options offered by area restaurants and vendors range from wine and champagne to crêpes and beignets.

Saturday at 5:15 p.m., a traditional French Mass is celebrated at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 812 N. Jackson St. On Sunday, the thrills and spills of the annual Waiter/Waitress Race begin at 4 p.m.

To register for the run/walk or for more information about Bastille Days, phone the East Town Association at 271-1416 or visit www.easttown.com.
