Skyfest to fill the air with colorful hot air balloons
FORGET THE birds, planes or even Superman July 20-22 in Southeastern Wisconsin. In the sky those three days will be more than 30 hot air balloons from throughout the U.S. competing in Skyfest 2007, the 13th annual Wisconsin Hot Air Balloon Championship.
Held annually as part of the Waukesha County Fair, the championship will include the popular “mass ascension” between 6 and 8 p.m. July 20 and 21 from the northwest corner of the Waukesha County Fairgrounds.
A “night glow,” referring to the internal illumination caused by a balloon’s lit burner, features several balloons tethered to the ground at approximately 9 p.m. each day. And dawn balloon launches are scheduled daily between 6 and 8 a.m.
The Waukesha County Fair is the oldest county fair in the state, held this year for the 165th time from July 18-22. The fairgrounds are located just south of I-94 at exit 294 (Highway J). Take J south to the second traffic light (Northview Rd.) and west to the fairgrounds.
