Milwaukee at center of international cycling world
While the Cycling Classic begins July 13 in Chicago, 14 of the remaining 17 races are held in Wisconsin, where large crowds annually create a festival atmosphere for all the Superweek Pro Tour races. July 19: Racing from 4-8 p.m through the streets of Shorewood, including Oakland Avenue. July 21: Racing throughout downtown Waukesha. July 24: Daytime and evening racing in Cedarburg, including sprints down the main street of Washington Ave. July 28: Racing on Milwaukee Downer Ave. on Milwaukee’s north side. July 29: Racing in Whitefish Bay through the business district on Silver Spring Dr. Other races nearby include road racing July 16 in East Troy southwest of Milwaukee; road racing July 17 in Lyons, Wis., near Burlington; road racing July 23 over the difficult Holy Hill course near Hartford northwest of Milwaukee; street racing in Sheboygan July 26 and street racing in Kenosha July 27. One of few PGA stops to be played on a public course, the U.S. Bank Championship tests the professionals’ skills at Brown Deer Park Golf Course, a Milwaukee County course in Glendale just north of the city. While the U.S. Bank Championship this year conflicts with the prestigious British Open, the field remains very strong with many crowd favorites: • Tour veteran Corey Pavin, who won the tournament in 1986 and last year became the eighth two-time winner, returns to defend his title. • Bernhard Langer, two-time Masters Champion and a stalwart of the European Ryder Cup team, will play here for the first time. • Jesper Parnevik, the colorful Swedish player who has won five titles on the PGA Tour, returns for the second time. The full week of golf action begins Monday, July 16, with a pro-am event and PGA Tour player practice rounds. A youth clinic, celebrity shoot-out and continued pro practice rounds will fill the day July 17. Admission is free to events on both Monday and Tuesday. After another pro-am Wednesday morning, the first round of the championship begins approximately at 7 a.m. Thursday, July 19. Gates open at 6 a.m. The second round is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. July 20, the third at 8 a.m. July 21 and the final round at 8 a.m. Sunday, July 22. For information on tickets and business packages, call 414-431-GOLF or visit the U.S. Bank Championship site at www.usbankchampionship.com. The U.S. Bank Championship is a non-profit event that has contributed more than $5.7 million to Wisconsin charities since 1994. U.S. Bancorp (www.usbank.com), with $219 billion in assets, is the sixth-largest commercial bank in the U.S. and is the parent company of U.S. Bank.
THE MILWAUKEE BREWERS have the chance this month to show whether they can continue the aggressive play that produced national recognition during the first half of the National League season. July home series include three games against the San Francisco Giants. The Giants series includes an unusually late-starting game at 2:55 p.m. to accommodate national television, following Barry Bonds’s quest to pass Hank Aaron’s record for career home runs.
