Historic Cedarburg stages first German festival July 19 & 20

WITH A SALUTE to its German founders and a hearty helping of Gemuetlichkeit, Historic Cedarburg kicks off the Cedarburg German Festival from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, and from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 20. There is free admission and parking.

Located primarily outdoors in Cedar Creek Park, the festival offers German sausages and beer, as well as other authentic dishes and desserts.

Lively and infectious German music in the park band shell both days spotlight the Pommersche Spaldeel Performance Group & Band, Tuba Dan, the Alte Kameraden Band, Polka Dotz, Blaskapelle Milwaukee and Zither. A live Cuckoo Clock Show reappears every two hours, beginning at noon daily.

A Sunday afternoon Sheepshead (Schafskopf) Tournament is planned for the Cedarburg Cultural Center, W62 N546 Washington Avenue. The Cultural Center also hosts a farmers market and outdoor craft fair.

Daily tours will be available of the historic Kuehfuss House, on Washington Avenue. Tours also are offered for Cedar Creek Winery, located in the Cedar Creek Settlement, a complex of shops and galleries, in addition to this working winery.

German Festival attendees will enjoy strolling the streets of Historic Cedarburg and experiencing its historic ambiance. Founded in the 1840s, Cedarburg is a National Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city is home to more than 100 restored and intact buildings of historic significance. Through careful preservation, the downtown looks much as it did a century ago.

Cedarburg is located just 20 minutes north of Milwaukee off I-43. For further information, phone 262-375-7611 or check the website for updates at www.ci.cedarburg.wi.us (City Departments; Parks & Recreation; German Festival).
