International Cycling Classic returns to Milwaukee’s lakefront

THE 41ST INTERNATIONAL Cycling Classic, which includes the Superweek Pro Tour, this month returns to the Milwaukee lakefront where American cycling legends Greg Lemond and Lance Armstrong once competed.

Recognized as the world’s largest multi-category cycling event, the classic will bring top amateur and professional cyclists from more than 20 countries to Southeastern Wisconsin for races from July 16-26.

“All the greats have raced on the lakefront course,” says Eddy Van Guyse, a Californian who has served as race announcer for many years.

Although the series begins with races in Chicago and northern Illinois, the bulk of the action will be in Southeastern Wisconsin:

July 16 - Road racing returns to Milwaukee’s Lakefront, site of seven national championships. Greg Lemond won the U.S. Cycling Championship here in 1979 before winning the world championship. Short-course racing will begin at the Bradford Beach parking lot at 10 a.m.

The action moves to N. Oakland Ave. in Shorewood in the late afternoon for the fifth Shorewood Criterium beginning at 4 p.m.

July 17 – The rolling hills of the Kettle Moraine will be the site of the Tour of Holy Hill, a road race beginning and ending at Pike Lake State Park near Hartford.

July 18 – Cycling returns to Brewers Hill in Milwaukee for the first time since 2006 as the Schlitz Park Cycling Challenge gives riders a full day of racing on a challenging course just north of downtown Milwaukee.

July 20 – Whitnall Park and the Boerner Botanical Gardens provide the setting for a day of racing at the Whitnall Park Road Race.

July 21 – The Cedarburg Cycling Classic includes daytime races and a 5:45 p.m. pro-am race down Washington Avenue through the business district.

July 22 – Milwaukee’s lakefront will again be the scene of long-course road racing.

July 23 – Racing shifts to Racine for a full day of action at the Racine.org Criterium.

July 24 – Folks & Spokes races are scheduled in Kenosha.

July 25 – The Humboldt Park Criterium on Milwaukee’s near south side is scheduled in the morning and early afternoon.

July 25 – The Great Downer Avenue Bike Race on Milwaukee’s East Side, one of the best known professional races in the U.S., is set for 5:45 p.m.

July 26 – The Whitefish Bay Classic on the recently refurbished Silver Spring Dr. rounds out the series with a full day of racing beginning at 11:30 a.m.
