42ND International Cycling Classic adds venues
Also known as the Superweek Pro Series, the classic gives U.S. cyclists the chance to compete against riders from Australia and Taiwan to South Africa and several European nations. Five races from July 9-13 in Chicago and northern Illinois kick off the series. The first of 12 Wisconsin races is the Lake Geneva Criterium July 14, followed by two new races in Metro Milwaukee: • Cudahy’s South Shore Cyclery Classic July 15 begins at 10 a.m. and ends with pro racing at 5 p.m. • The first Brookfield Criterium July 16 circles the Civic Plaza on N. Calhoun Ave. from 9:30 a.m. until the final pro race at 5:45 p.m. Family events are planned during the day. On July 17, cyclists climb hill the historic Schlitz Park Course. Racing on Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. between Cherry and Vine Sts. begins at 10 a.m., with the last race at 5:45 p.m. A July 19 road race through Whitnall Park in Hales Corners begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 4:15 p.m. Another new road race, the Bucyrus International Road Race, is set for July 20 in South Milwaukee from 10 a.m. through 5:45 p.m. Milwaukee’s Lakefront Course where Lance Armstrong once raced is the scene of road racing from 9 a.m.-noon July 21. Races are scheduled July 22 in downtown Racine and July 23 in Kenosha’s downtown Library Park. On July 24, racing runs from 9:30 a.m.-1:45 p.m. in Milwaukee’s Humboldt Park and the 42nd Great Downer Avenue International Bike Race is set for 5:45 p.m. on Milwaukee’s East Side. The Whitefish Bay Classic July 25 on Silver Spring Dr. concludes this season’s series. The first race is set for 11:30 a.m. and the last pro race at 5:45 p.m. Visit www.internationalcycling.com for information on each race. Brewers face Giants, Nationals at Miller Park
Located just west of downtown Milwaukee, Miller Park is recognized as one of the best stadiums in major league baseball. The retractable roof guarantees all games will be played. Tickets are available online at www.brewers.com. Visitors driving to Miller Park may find the Canal Street entrance (west from 6th St. at the Harley-Davidson Museum) preferable to entrances off I-94. July home games: Iron ends regular season, ready for playoffs
This month, with only one regular-season home game remaining at 7 p.m. July 17 against the Orlando Predators, the Iron almost is sure of a berth in the playoffs. The team is led by Coach Bob Landsee, an All American and All Big Ten guard at the University of Wisconsin who played four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League. All Iron home games are played at the Bradley Center. Season and individual-game ticket information and details about players and special events are available at www.mkeiron.com. |
