Downtown Housing Expo Sept. 16 RECOGNIZED as one of the top downtown living spaces for Ruppies (retired urban people), Milwaukee will show off its newest living spaces to young and old prospects Sept. 16 at the annual Downtown Open House and Housing Expo. Sponsored by the Greater Milwaukee Association of REALTORS and Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District 21, the sixth annual event from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. will be based at Pere Marquette Park between W. State St. and W. Kilbourn Ave. Exhibit booths in the park will describe newly opened and planned downtown condominium and apartment projects and free transportation will shuttle to and from various open house properties in the Historic Third Ward, Walker's Point, Brewer's Hill and the heart of downtown. “This unique event allows visitors to sample the urban lifestyle,” said Joanna Tusing, director of promotions for the association. “From sleek high-rises to open concept lofts, the Downtown Expo puts the range of downtown living options on full display.” In addition to the exhibits from builders and developers, Pere Marquette also will be at the center of the Milwaukee River Challenge, with college rowers competing throughout the day in four- and eight-member crews (See page 57). Also appearing at Pere Marquette Park will be author Kyle Ezell, whose recent book Retire Downtown gives high ratings to the city as a place for retired urban people. Ezell will sell and autograph copies of his book, which also provides information on finding housing, getting around, shopping and volunteering.
