Milwaukee River Challenge brings
two national teams to city Sept. 16

THE SIXTH ANNUAL Milwaukee River Challenge Sept. 16 will feature competition between outstanding midwestern crews and a race between two eights from the U.S. national team.

Recognized as the only two-way regatta in the U.S., the Milwaukee River Challenge takes place in a course that runs from the Historic Third Ward on the south to the Humboldt Avenue bridge on the north.

Collegiate teams set to compete in races for four- and eight-member crews are the men’s and women’s teams from Purdue, Northwestern and Marquette universities and rowing clubs from Lincoln Park in Chicago, Mendota in Madison and the Duluth Rowing Club. The powerful women’s crews from the University of Wisconsin-Madison also are scheduled to race.

Gary Ahrens of the Milwaukee Rowing Club said the competition between the two national eights is an added attraction this year. Competition has already begun for spots on the national team that will compete in the 2008 Olympics in China.

The center of the racecourse is Pere Marquette Park between W. State St. and W. Kilbourn Ave. Spectators also gather on bridges, skywalks and restaurants on the Milwaukee’s popular RiverWalk. Teams will be practicing on the Milwaukee River Friday, Sept. 15.

Again this year, the Downtown Housing Expo will be held in conjunction with the Challenge. Free transportation will be provided from Pere Marquette Park to participating properties in the downtown area.
