Milwaukee County Parks celebrate 100 years

DURING 2007, Milwaukee County Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Because of the vision of Milwaukee’s leaders, the county is home to 150 parks and parkways, encompassing more than 15,000 acres. Early commissioners were national leaders in advocating intelligent land use that created many miles of county parkways, the lakefront beaches and neighborhoods separated from factory districts.

This year, KEY Special Events listings have highlighted many of the anniversary celebration activities.  Golf coverage in monthly issues and online at KeyMilwaukee.com describe the extensive system of courses that serve every level of competitor, from beginner to PGA pros who play at Brown Deer.

With cooler fall weather, the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (“the Domes”), becomes a favorite destination. One of the gems of the park system, the conservatory’s three Domes each has a unique environment.

In the Arid Dome, find one of the world’s finest collections of cacti, succulents and shrubs. An oasis of grasses and desert palms beckons as paths wind among plant oddities with intriguing geometric forms.

The jungle-like trails of the Tropical Dome focus on plants from the rainforests of five continents. A multitude of orchids and bromeliads, plus a rushing waterfall, greet visitors. (Colorful birds also call the Tropical Dome their home.)

The Floral Show Dome features five seasonal displays each year. “School Days” runs through Nov. 4, and the holiday floral show opens Nov. 17.

Balloon-a-Palooza Nov. 17-25 brings the largest display of balloon sculptures in the U.S. to the Domes. Balloon artists from throughout the world will build characters and scenes depicting a circus, water park, art museum and cartoon characters. A special “Secret Garden” maze also is planned.

The Domes, just west of downtown Milwaukee, are reached via I-94 West at 27th St., south across the 27th St. bridge to the Domes. The address is 524 S. Layton Blvd., and hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. For more information, phone 414-649-9800 or visit www.countyparks.com.
