Milwaukee glows during Holiday Lights Festival

DANCING LUMINARIES, animated displays, elaborate storefront windows and twinkling rooflines are just some of the things that will make downtown Milwaukee’s ninth annual Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival grand.  Downtown Milwaukee’s official holiday celebration will set downtown aglow and ring in the holiday season Thursday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Jan. 6.

The seven-week festival includes thousands of glowing lights coupled with hundreds of events and a convenient Jingle Bus tour.

Annually, the festival kicks off with the Holiday Lights Kick-Off Extravaganza at 6 p.m. on Nov. 15 in Pere Marquette Park, W. State St. and Old World 3rd St. The program includes exciting entertainment, live music, a visit from Santa Claus and a thrilling fireworks show, all leading up to the simultaneous flip-switching of the holiday lights in Pere Marquette Park, Zeidler Union Square and Cathedral Square Park.

Along with great entertainment, fest-goers will also receive complimentary rides on the Jingle Bus from Pere Marquette Park, hot cocoa and coffee, cookies, and free coloring books and crayons.

Each year, three downtown parks are transformed into a winter wonderland complete with animated light sculptures and thousands of glowing lights. Cathedral Square Park, located at N. Jefferson and E. Wells Sts., will be molded into “Community Spirit Park.”  Over 30 area schools will adorn fresh evergreens with ornaments reflecting their chosen holiday themes.  The energy efficient LED lit trees will surround a 50-foot tree of ever-changing red, blue and green lights.
“Holiday Central at the North Pole” at Pere Marquette Park, and “Penguin Playground” at Zeidler Union Square, W. Michigan between 3rd and 4th Sts., will be adorned in thousands of twinkling lights and animated scenes.

The Jingle Bus takes visitors on a 40-minute narrated tour throughout downtown for $1 per person. Pick up the bus at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center, 509 W. Wisconsin Ave. The Jingle Bus operates Thursdays through Sundays, Nov. 15 through Dec. 30, 6 to 9 p.m.  The last Jingle Bus departs at approximately 8:20 p.m. The Jingle Bus will not operate Thanksgiving Day.
