& Art Happenings
The Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend offers an array of artistic and cultural events this holiday season, from stunning current exhibitions to luscious floral arrangements to lights, wine and shopping.
Bloomin’ Holidays, a bright and cheerful homage to flowers, lights and local artisans, runs Nov. 6-10 at Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend (MOWA). It begins with Bloomin’ Lights, an outdoor, large-scale globe light installation that illuminates the MOWA gardens from 5-10pm every night. The lights are joined by a floral-inspired video created by Milwaukee artist Maeve Jackson and projected on MOWA’s exterior.
During the weekend, Nov. 8-10, 27 floral arrangements fill the galleries by top designers from southeast Wisconsin. Some arrangements are holiday-inspired while others interpret works of art throughout the museum. The weekend offers drop-in talks and demonstrations by floral design professionals ranging from holiday wreaths and centerpieces to seasonal succulents and spring blooming blooms.
While the MOWA Shop is always a great place to find unique gifts made by Wisconsin artists, the indoor Holiday Artist Marketplace (open from 10am-5pm on Friday and Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday) brings a special selection of artisan vendors to the museum for Bloomin’ Holidays.
Bloomin’ Holidays is free for members. The cost for nonmembers is $15, which includes a complimentary MOWA membership for one full year.
The museum is located at 205 Veterans Ave., West Bend. For information, phone (262) 334-9638 or visit wisconsinart.org.

Tom Uttech: Into the Woods
For the first time in MOWA’s history, all three changing exhibition spaces and much of the permanent collection galleries have been dedicated to the work of a single artist: Tom Uttech.
Curated by MOWA Executive Director Laurie Winters, Tom Uttech: Into the Woods provides the first full-career retrospective of the works of the renowned Saukville painter. With a career spanning 60 years, Uttech is considered both a natural landscape and Magical Realist painter. He melds fantasy with environmentalism in his spellbinding paintings inspired by the Northwoods of the upper Midwest and Canada.
The works transport his viewers into mesmerizing worlds of mythical forests and desolate, yet meditative, landscapes. Commissioned by MOWA for this exhibit, Nin Gassinsibingwe (Ojibwe for “I wipe my tears”) is Uttech’s latest painting in his spectacular migration series. The exhibition features many never-before-seen works, including more than 200 photographs, drawings, and paintings.
Complementing the Into the Woods exhibition is the special installation, On the Water, featuring handmade wood canoes and kayaks by Sinissippi Boats and paddles by Winnebago Paddles.
