ROUND FIGURES
The state of Golf in Wisconsin

By JERRY SLASKE
KeyMilwaukee.com Golf Editor

Recession? What recession?

Wisconsin golfers don’t seem to be too down about the economy. Or if they are, they’re taking out their anxieties on the little white ball.

Through June of this year, the number of rounds played in Wisconsin was up 6.2% - seventh best among all 50 states, according to information provided by Jeff Schwister, executive director of the Golf Course Owners of Wisconsin, from National Golf Foundation reports. Of the 44 metropolitan areas surveyed, Milwaukee ranked ninth, with the number of rounds up 3.6% for the year.

As far as Wisconsin being a golf mecca, you be the judge.

The state’s 394 publicly accessible courses (353 18-hole regulation, 20.5 executive and 20.5 par-3 ) rank Wisconsin 5th in population per 18 holes. That beats Minnesota (7th) and Michigan (8th) and is right behind Iowa (4th). North Dakota and South Dakota rank 1st and 2nd respectively.

For those who think Arizona, California, Florida, or Nevada are where the golf action is, those states rank 23rd, 50th, 25th, and 32nd respectively. Of course, weather and length of season are other matters.

Looking at the 363 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the U.S., you find that Wisconsin’s MSAs rank high, based on population per hole (from lowest to highest):

• Chicago (which includes Kenosha) 282nd
• Racine 177th
• Wausau 160th
• Milwaukee/West Allis/Waukesha 155th
• Fond du Lac 121st
• Appleton 110th
• Madison 83rd
• Eau Claire 74th
• Janesville 61st
• LaCrosse 59th
• Oshkosh/Neenah 58th
• Green Bay 32nd

And the top spot in Wisconsin goes to (here’s a hint: “flush”). That’s right, it’s Sheboygan, which includes Kohler and Haven, home to the great courses of Kohler and Sheboygan Falls, home to The Bull at Pinehurst Farms. The Sheboygan area ranks eighth in population per golf hole among the nation’s 363 MSAs

Obviously, Wisconsin not only likes its beer and brats, but also likes to play a round of golf…or two or three.

Foreward Wisconsin!
