PGA history exhibit comes to Kohler

By JERRY SLASKE
KeyMilwaukee.com Golf Editor

To celebrate the return of the PGA Championship to Wisconsin for the second time in seven years, an exhibit on the history of the PGA Championship is open to public at The Shops at Woodlake Kohler, located in the village of Kohler.

You’ll be able to enjoy some of the most famous and rarest memorabilia involving the tournament and its past champions.

The free exhibit will be open through Aug. 22, including tournament play Aug. 9-15 at Whistling Straits, just 55 miles north of downtown Milwaukee. Until Aug. 9, hours are noon-4 p.m. daily. From Aug. 9-14, exhibit hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and on Aug. 15, noon-5 p.m.

The “History of the Season’s Final Major” exhibit premiered in 2000 at the PGA Championship in Louisville. It features the driver Jim Barnes used to win the inaugural tournament in 1916; Jack Nicklaus’ wedge used in his 1980 PGA win; Phil Mickelson’s wedge used in his 2005 victory; and Y.E. Yang’s 3-hybrid that sealed the 2009 victory against Tiger Woods.

For more information on the exhibit, visit www.DestinationKohler.com or call 920-457-4447, ext. 55186.

While visiting the PGA history exhibit, also play one of Kohler’s world-class courses or try the equally challenging Bull at Pinehurst Farms just south in Sheboygan Falls.

GCOW makes state a golf haven

One of several non-profit organizations working to make Wisconsin a haven for golf is the Golf Course Owners of Wisconsin (GCOW). The GCOW supports owners in their efforts to bring you the best and most affordable golf.

For the golfer, the GCOW distributes an annual golf directory and also sells its popular Platinum Passport book. This year’s book includes 26 of the state’s best courses, including seven private country clubs, with a total greens fees value of more than $2,000. If you spend a lot of time in the state, consider purchasing a book. Only 200 are available each year.

One of 19 chapters of the National Golf Course Owners Association, GCOW also helps grow the game through a variety of promotions and events. Visit www.gcow.org for more information or call 414-443-3568 (800-348-2721).

Golf Week cites Brown Deer, Washington County courses

The latest issue of Golf Week magazine ranks Washington County Golf Course (www.golfwcgc.com, 262-670-6616) and Brown Deer Golf Course (a George Hansen parkland course in Milwaukee County, www.countyparks.com) among the top 50 municipal courses in the nation.

Washington County is ranked 35th; Brown Deer, 46th. They are the only Wisconsin munis in the ranking. I have written frequently about these great and affordable tracts. Be sure to give them a shot when you’re in the Milwaukee area.
