DOES SIZE MATTER?
State’s greens offer something for everyone

By JERRY SLASKE
KeyMilwaukee.com Golf Editor

GREEN SIZE. DOES IT MATTER? That depends. Are you a good iron or approach shot player, but a putter with a death grip? If so, you probably favor smaller greens. But if you’re a good putter, and only a so-so iron or approach shot player, you might prefer larger greens.

And if you’re an overall good player, it probably doesn’t much matter. Green complexes (how greens are bunkered and positioned), green contours, and pin placements are most likely of greater interest.

Southeastern Wisconsin has something to satisfy every type of player. If you like small, but fast greens with cunning contour, The Bull at Pinehurst Farms, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, might be your cup of tee. If you like huge greens with slick slopes, then Nagawaukee is for you.

Of course, as any golfer knows, there is much more that goes into making a particular course attractive. Everything from how it looks to the eye, to course conditions, to course layout, to the people who work there. But this is strictly about green sizes.

The following is a partial list of area courses and their average green sizes (from smallest to largest):

The Bull at Pinehurst Farms, 3,800 sq. ft. 800-584-3285 www.golfthebull.com

New Berlin Hills Golf Course 5,000 sq. ft. 262-780-5200 www.newberlinhills.com

Deertrak Golf Club 5,500 sq. ft.920-474-4444 www.deertrakgolf.com

Hartford Golf Club 5,500 sq. ft.262-673-2710 www.hartfordgolfclubwi.com

Western Lakes Golf Club 5,500 sq. ft. 262-691-0900 www.westernlakes.com

Washington County Golf Course 5,700 sq. ft. 262-670-6616 www.golfwcgc.com

Broadlands Golf Club 6,000 sq. ft. 262-392-6320 www.broadlandsgolfclub.com

Ironwood Golf Course 6,300 sq. ft.262-538-9900 www.ironwoodgolfcourse.com

Morningstar Golf Club 6,400 sq. ft 262-662-1600 www.golfthestar.com

Brown Deer Golf Course 6,500 sq. ft. 414-352-8080 www.county.milwaukee.gov

Geneva National Golf Club: 262-245-7000 www.genevanationalresort.com
Trevino 6,500 sq. ft.
Palmer 6,500 sq. ft.
Player 6,500 sq. ft.

Blackwolf Run 800-618-5535 www.destinationkohler.com
River 7,000 sq. ft.
Meadow Valleys 7,000 sq. ft.

The Bog 7,000 sq. ft. 262-284-7075 www.golfthebog.com

Mee-Kwon Park Golf Course 7,100 sq. ft. 262-242-1310 www.co.ozaukee.wi.us

Whistling Straits 800-618-5535 www.destinationkohler.com
Straits 8,000 sq. ft.
Irish 8,000 sq. ft.

Nagawaukee Golf Course 9,000 sq. ft. 262-367-2153 www.waukeshacounty.gov

To give these green sizes some perspective, consider that an NFL end zone is 4,800 sq. ft.; a tennis court, 2,808 sq. ft.; a major league baseball diamond (within the base lines), 8,100 sq. ft.; and a basketball court (NBA and college), 4,700 sq. ft.

Before choosing any of the above courses, consider that the Straits – a Pete Dye gem and site of the 2010 PGA Championship – will cost you a cool $425 a round, but that includes a caddie and a modest tip, while a round at Washington County – an Arthur Hills design and the 35th best muni in the country as rated recently by Golf Week – will cost $40-$50, depending upon when you play.

It probably goes without saying that there are no public-access courses more expensive to play than Whistling Straits in the region, but then few courses host major golf tournaments on a regular basis or are as breathtaking. There are, however, plenty of courses less expensive than even Washington County.

So does green size matter? It’s all relative.
